Matcha, which is consumed together with the leaf, and bud teas can come close to coffee. For more details, see the article [link: How much caffeine is in tea]. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) considers up to 400 mg of caffeine per day and up to 200 mg at a time to be safe for healthy adults [1].

Why does tea invigorate differently than coffee?

The main difference is L-theanine. This is an amino acid that occurs naturally almost exclusively in tea leaves. It is associated with a state of calm alertness: a clear head, but without trembling hands. The caffeine in tea is partially bound to tannins, which is why it is absorbed somewhat slower. Because of this, alertness builds up more smoothly and rarely ends in a sharp energy crash.

What do studies say about L-theanine and caffeine?

In a 2008 study (Haskell et al., Biological Psychology), participants received 250 mg of L-theanine and 150 mg of caffeine. The combination reduced feelings of fatigue and drowsiness, increased alertness, and improved speed and accuracy in several tests [2]. In a 2015 study (Dodd et al., Psychopharmacology), the doses were closer to a cup of tea: 50 mg of L-theanine and 75 mg of caffeine. Here, the combination did not improve performance compared to caffeine alone [3]. The conclusion is honest: the effect of L-theanine is real, but it depends on the dose, and there is not much of it in a single cup of tea. Therefore, tea should be perceived as a milder source of energy rather than a cure for distraction.

When is coffee better, and when is tea?

How to drink tea for focus

Brew tea using multiple short infusions: several brief steeps provide a steady dose of caffeine over an hour or two.

Do not drink tea on an empty stomach: it can cause nausea.

Drink your last caffeinated cup 6–8 hours before bedtime.

Drink water between cups: dehydration itself impairs concentration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What invigorates stronger: green tea or coffee?

Coffee.
